fauja singh-1Known as the Turbaned Tornado Fauja Singh has his sights set on breaking the Guiness World record for being the first person on the planet to finish a full-distance marathon past the age of 100. He intends on doing this on Sunday in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Singh began running long distances in 2000. He lined up for his first Flora London Marathon at the grand old age of 89, taking 6 hours and 54 minutes to complete the 26.2-mile course. A year later, he ran the same time to set a world record for anyone aged 90. In 2003, in the Toronto marathon, he set a record in the 90-plus category, finishing the 42.1 kilometres in five hours, 40 minutes and one second.

India introduced a cheap tablet computer Wednesday, saying it would deliver modern technology to the countryside to help lift villagers out of poverty.

The computer, called Aakash, or "sky" in Hindi, is the latest in a series of cheap Indian innovations that include a 100,000 rupee ($2,130) Nano car, a 750 rupee ($16) water purifier and $2,100 open-heart surgery.

mobile commerceOn an unusually hot San Francisco morning in mid-September, a customer walked into a Peet’s Coffee location, bought a cup of brew and paid for it by waving their Samsung Nexus cellphone at a receiver, and became one of the first people to use a so-called mobile wallet in North America.

Such cellphone payments have been common in Japan, South America and Europe for years, but they're only just getting off the ground in Canada and the United States. Internet search giant Google launched Google Wallet last month and a crush of others are expected to follow.
